These five caves, adorned with intricate murals and statues, epitomize the grandeur of Sinhalese Buddhist artistry. Dating back to around 100 BC, the caves hold a rich history tied to King Vattagamini Abhaya. Forced into exile by Tamil invaders, he sought refuge under a vast granite overhang in Dambulla for 14 years. Upon reclaiming his throne, he transformed the site into a sacred temple complex. Successive kings, including Nissankamalla and Kandyan rulers, further enriched the caves with elaborate embellishments and murals. Today, these awe-inspiring temples stand as a testament to Sri Lanka’s spiritual and artistic legacy.
