From sunrise turtle watches to blow holes and ancient temples, your easy guide to Mawella-Tangalle.
Destination
Deewara sits along Sri Lanka’s southern coast in the quiet fishing village of Mawella, just outside the town of Tangalle — a stretch of coastline known for its unspoilt beaches, working fishing harbours, and a slower, saltier pace of life. Steps from the property, Mawella Lagoon opens onto mangrove-lined waters home to kingfishers, herons, and the occasional water snake, best explored by kayak or on a quiet boat tour at sunrise. A short distance further, the Hummanaya Blow Hole — the second-largest natural blowhole in the world — sends spray skyward beside the working piers of Kudawella Fishing Harbour.
Tangalle’s coastline moves at its own unhurried rhythm, where fishing boats still come in with the day’s catch and the beach belongs more to seabirds than crowds. It’s a coast built for lingering, best taken in barefoot, with nowhere in particular to be.
Adventure lies just as close at hand. Rekawa Beach, 18 km away, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important turtle nesting sites, while the ancient rock temple of Mulgirigala rises 205 metres over the countryside inland. Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, each around two hours out, offer safaris among leopards and elephants. Whether hauling in a seine net, watching turtles nest by moonlight, or drifting through mangrove channels, Deewara is your perfect base to experience southern Sri Lanka at your own pace.
