Kandy

An all-embracing experience awaits
Image

Enveloped in history that seems to be ever so present even today, Kandy is considered a sacred city and is also the home of a very special treasure. This destination in the hills was a powerful kingdom in Sri Lanka before the country was taken under British rule. The city’s colonial structures remain intact and although not used, these buildings are still the pride of this laid-back city just 15 minutes away from Mountbatten Bungalow which is known to have once been Lord Mountbatten’s safe house.

The Temple of The Tooth Relic also known as Dalada Maligawa in Sinhala is one of the most iconic places to visit in Kandy. It is a symbol of the island’s rich history that holds the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. The Kandy Perahera, which is a festive procession to venerate this wonderful paragon of religious history takes place every year from this temple in the month of August and is a wonderful event for tourists to experience.

Kandy is not just about history and culture, but also very much about nature as well. Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is one of the most beautiful spots in the city with hundreds of species of flora to explore. For an experience with the gentle giants of the forest, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the best place to be and bath time for the elephants is certainly the highlight of the day. For those who love a little adventure, the Hanthana Mountain Range in Kandy is ideal for a challenging hike to conquer.
