Situated in the Southern Province of the island, Tissamaharama is a small town in the Hambantota district famous for its historic and religious significance. The temple has existed since the 3rd century BC in Sri Lanka and King Kavan Tissa is said to have planned its construction. Another iconic attraction of the town would be the Tissa Wewa built by the very ruler who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka, King Devanampiyatissa.

Tissamaharama is well-known for its buffalo curd which is a favourite Sri Lankan delight visitors ought to try. The many paddy fields travellers will spot while exploring this area are quite soothing to the eye. Depending on which time of the year it is, one might also spot a few farmers at work in their paddy fields which is the main livelihood in the area. Yala, not far from here is where wildlife enthusiasts will find paradise.
