Power up your ride with electric vibes!

Thema Collection, a leading Thematic Eco Friendly hospitality chain in Sri Lanka, has recently launched an innovative sustainable tourism initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions and protecting biodiversity. This initiative involves an e-bike tour to Sigiriya from Aliya Resort & Spa, the first of its kind in the country, offering guests a unique and eco-friendly way to experience Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and culture.

Sri Lanka is among the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, with the transport sector being one of the primary carbon emitters responsible for almost 47% of the CO2 emissions in the country. On the other hand, tourism has been one of the country’s largest foreign income sources, with Sigiriya being one of the most popular tourist destinations.

Therefore, sustainable transportation solutions such as the e-bike tour to popular attractions could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the tourism industry.

The launch of this initiative on the 1st of March 2023 was attended by German guests from NKAR travels, who thoroughly enjoyed the event. Speaking at the launch, Mr. Chandra Wickramasinghe, Chairman of Thema Collection, emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism in overcoming the consequences of climate change. He stated that “the e-bike tour is a great way to reduce carbon emissions and provide guests with a unique experience of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and culture.”

Thema Collection has always been at the forefront of sustainable practices, having won the Green Building Gold award in 2013 for Aliya Resort and Spa and the Platinum award in 2022 for Wild Glamping Gal Oya. The company plans to expand this initiative to other resorts in the country and has invited other stakeholders to join hands in taking the initiative forward.

Director – Marketing & Business Development, Mr. Maxime Wickramasinghe highlighted the importance of the initiative for the protection of Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity. He emphasized that “the use of e-bikes will not only reduce carbon emissions but also noise pollution. This will be a good opportunity for our guests to experience and learn more about the wildlife surrounding our resorts.”

The e-bike tour to Sigiriya from Aliya Resort & Spa is a groundbreaking initiative that showcases Thema Collection’s commitment to sustainable tourism. By expanding this initiative to other resorts in the country, the company aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the tourism industry while offering guests a unique and eco-friendly way to experience Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and culture.
