Wild Glamping Gal Oya Receives Bronze Award at Presidential Environment Awards!

Wild Glamping Gal Oya by Thema Collection has been honoured with a Bronze Award for its outstanding sustainability efforts at the Presidential Environment Awards 2024, organised by the Central Environment Authority. The Presidential Environment Awards is an initiative that encourages public participation in sustainable environmental practices and is considered one of the highest honours in environmental conservation and protection in Sri Lanka. This year’s event took place on June 28, 2024, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, under the patronage of Honourable Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

This was the 10th annual Presidential Environment Awards ceremony, with more than 1,200 applicants, including industrialists, government officers, local authorities, schools, private sector institutions, and many others. We are honoured to be one of the hotel sector winners among the 124 award recipients that day. The most special aspect of the event was the awards themselves, which were made from recycled beer cans; a remarkable and eco-friendly approach by the Central Environment Authority.

Wild Glamping Gal Oya, a thematic and eco-friendly glamping site by Thema Collection, is located in Iginiyagala, Bibile. Designed to provide an authentic experience for guests, it is a one-of-a-kind property in Sri Lanka that allows visitors to experience the country’s indigenous culture. Notably, a significant portion of the employees are from the indigenous and local communities, and the majority of the food requirements are sourced locally. This approach ensures that the benefits are widely distributed among the local community showcasing the property’s sustainability.

The interior and architecture of the Gal Oya property are exceptionally sustainable. Having been developed during the challenging COVID period when finding construction materials was difficult, the villagers came up with innovative solutions, evident throughout the property. Additionally, the site implements no-plastic initiatives, waste management systems, and solar systems, contributing to a reduction in the country’s carbon footprint.
