Coral Restoration

Restoration, one coral at a time
Image

Coral reefs, in their myriad hues, are not only a beautiful part of the underwater world but also a crucial one. Yet, they were destroyed in their hundreds by the devastating impact of the 2004 tsunami that hit Sri Lanka. That’s why we take our efforts to replant coral very seriously.

Join the cause – help us in our efforts to restore the coral landscape of the Bay of Pasikudah by replanting one coral at a time.

One coral reef alone can play a vital role in the survival and proliferation of several marine organisms. This makes coral reefs a cornerstone of many marine ecosystems. However, despite their beauty and importance, they are under constant threat across oceans worldwide, due to factors such as rising ocean temperatures that have been brought about by global warming. They are also vulnerable to the impacts of natural disasters such as tsunamis.

In Sri Lanka, the 2004 tsunami that shattered many a coastal community on the island, also shattered much of the coral reef on the east coast; leaving sad devastation in its wake, where once, there was a world of colorful magnificence beneath the foamy waves. Today, while some of the coral reefs in Pasikudah Bay have grown back and are a delight to explore during an exhilarating session of snorkeling, much work still must be done to bring the underwater landscape back to its former glory. Our aim, here at Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa, is to make every effort that we can to help restore the coral ecosystem. This way, we can ensure that the beauty and biological diversity of our tropical waters are preserved for future generations on the east coast.

Join us at our Coral Museum to learn more about the role that coral reefs play in the region’s marine ecosystem and what can be done to help.
