REV Computer Language School | Sustainability at Maalu Maalu Resort
Being the first east coast hotel to commence operations in Sri Lanka’s post-civil war era, in what was then a largely isolated and war-affected region, we have taken it upon ourselves to assume the lion’s share of responsibility when it comes to improving the lives of people in the region.
Our R.e.V Computer & Language School initiative seeks to propel the younger generations of the east coast toward a brighter future. By offering access, free of charge, to modern computing technology and language lessons delivered by skilled instructors, we aim to level the playing field for the children of the marginalized communities of Pasikudah, Batticaloa and other towns in the region.
At Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa, we are committed to enhancing the lives of the local communities in many ways; the foremost of which is via our long-standing Reconstruire et Vivre (R.e.V) which is a foundation the founders and directors of Thema Collection and Connaissance De Ceylan have partnered with. ‘Reconstruire et Vivre’. This translates from French as ‘Rebuild and Live’ and it is this simple, yet powerful message that we live by when it comes to our approach to uplifting the lives of the children of the east coast.
We have dedicated ourselves to opening a path to success for these youngsters, and thereby, their entire communities, by providing them with the basic opportunities for academic and professional advancement. At our R.e.V Computing & Language School Center, the children of these east coast communities are encouraged to familiarize themselves with computers and software programs and hone their language skills, all of which are crucial components of their future success. All of these facilities are offered to the children free of charge.

Since then, over 50 inspiring speakers have joined the conversation, reaching thousands of curious minds through both online and in-person sessions.

Once known as the Kabaragalla Tea Factory, Tea & Experience Factory holds a beautiful little piece of Sri Lanka’s tea story. Back in 1883, at the very first tea auction, it was only Kabaragalla tea that was sold. Today, the factory has been transformed into a hotel, but its story still lives on right here at the property, in the old spaces, the tea-making legacy, and the charm that still lingers within its walls.

Last month, our resort manager, Jeewanthi Adhikari, naturalist, Sithumi Devindi, and maintenance executive, Samadhi Dasanayaka from Amba Yaalu Kandalama had the opportunity to take part in the Women in Travel Collective Members` Day as speakers under the theme "Women Driving Change in Hospitality."
Listening to them share their journeys, experiences, and the paths that brought them to where they are today was a proud moment for all of us. Their stories reflected the passion, resilience, and dedication that so many women bring to this industry every day.

Thema Collection has successfully completed and verified its 2024 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory across all properties and the Head Office. Verified by Control Union Sri Lanka, the assessment covered Scope 1 emissions, Scope 2 emissions, and a wide range of Scope 3 emission categories, providing a comprehensive understanding of our carbon footprint across operations and the value chain.
The certificate presentation, held at Thema Collection, brought together representatives from both organisations to celebrate this milestone and further strengthen the partnership. Together, we look forward to advancing transparency, accountability, and responsible tourism through continued collaboration.

Protecting the environment goes beyond a single action. Our team at Maalu Maalu Resort and Spa cleaned the shores of Elephant Rock for World Ocean Day, removing over 15 kg of waste from the coastal environment, we also engaged with the students of Nagamal College, Kalkudah, through a Climate Change awareness programme focused on the challenges facing our planet and the role each of us can play in creating change.
Because lasting impact comes from both caring for the environment today and empowering future generations to do the same.

This World Environment Day, Thema teams came together to make a positive impact on the environment.
At Tea & Experience Factory, staff conducted a clean-up campaign from the hotel to Pichchamal Ella Waterfall, collecting and properly disposing of waste from the surrounding area.
At Kithala Resort, a snake awareness and coexistence session educated staff on Sri Lanka’s snake species and their important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
At Mountbatten Bungalow, staff planted trees, including fruit-bearing species, to support local birdlife and enhance biodiversity.
Together, these efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to protecting nature, conserving biodiversity, and creating a more sustainable future.
