Discover the Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya
The Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya, established in 1821, sprawls across 140 acres, nestled along a loop of Sri Lanka’s longest river, the Mahaweli.
Originally designed for plant testing and acclimatization, it now proudly showcases an astounding array of biodiversity, including flora from diverse sub-tropical climates worldwide. Wander amidst regal palms, marvel at giant canon ball trees, and admire the captivating collection of orchids. Celebrities have planted some trees, adding to its allure. The garden not only offers a sanctuary for plants but also attracts diverse bird species, butterflies, and dragonflies. For a richer experience, consider engaging a local botanist to gain invaluable insights.
The Garden also housed the secret war room of Lord Mountbatten, who commanded the East Asian offensive of the allies at the time whilst using Mountbatten Bungalow as his secret war room.
