Turtle Conservation
Sri Lanka is home to five species of turtles out of the seven found worldwide. However, these precious species face significant threats due to human activities. As a nesting ground for these turtles, the resort takes on the responsibility of raising awareness about their protection.
With a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, Vis ta Vie engages in various awareness creation activities to educate both guests and the local community about the importance of conserving these endangered turtle species. Through educational programs, workshops, and informative materials, the resort strives to instill a sense of responsibility and understanding regarding the impact of human activities on the turtles’ nesting sites.
To strengthen their conservation efforts, the resort collaborates with local conservation organizations and authorities, actively participating in joint initiatives and supporting relevant projects. By fostering a culture of care and respect for the environment, Vis ta Vie aims to create a lasting positive impact on the protection of these remarkable marine creatures and their habitats.
Through our proactive approach and commitment to preserving Sri Lanka’s natural heritage, the resort aspires to secure a brighter and safer future for these magnificent turtles, ensuring that future generations can continue to witness their wonder and beauty.

We are delighted to share that Amba Yaalu – Kandalama by Thema Collection has won Gold at the 2026 Global Responsible Tourism Awards in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category!
Organised by International Centre for Responsible Tourism global, the awards recognise tourism businesses around the world that are taking responsibility for their impacts and making a meaningful difference. This year`s awards brought together 34 finalists from 24 countries, with just six global category winners.
Amba Yaalu was created to open doors for women in an industry where their participation has traditionally been low. Today, 92 women work across its operations, including in roles traditionally considered male-dominated, growing into confident professionals and taking on leadership responsibilities.
Adding to this achievement, Wild Glamping Gal Oya was named a global finalist in the Regenerative Tourism category, recognising its work in restoring landscapes, supporting local livelihoods and creating meaningful connections with nature and the community.
These recognitions mean a great deal to us, especially to the teams who have worked hard to make these stories possible.

With the rainy season setting in, the Team at Spice Ceylon (a concept by Thema Collection) came together to clean up Richard Aluwihara Mawatha, from the beginning of Jaffna Road up to our property. Along the way, 91 kg of waste, including glass, plastic, polythene, tins and tyres, was collected.
A small effort to keep the surroundings clean, reduce potential mosquito breeding sites and make the neighbourhood a little healthier for everyone.

During a trek to Pichchamal Ella, our naturalists at Tea & Experience Factory came across a Kandyan Dwarf Toad (Adenomus kandianus), a Critically Endangered endemic in the Kabaragalla Waterfall area.
Once considered extinct for more than a century, this little amphibian was rediscovered in Sri Lanka in 2009, after its last scientific record in 1876. Recently, our naturalists found it in the wet montane habitats of Mandaramnuwara.
Its presence there also makes our work around Kabaragalla Waterfall especially meaningful. Removing hazardous waste from the stream and surrounding habitat helps create safer conditions for the many species that depend on this delicate ecosystem.🌿

This World Tourism Day, as the world explores “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” we found a little way to bring the digital and the natural together. 🌿
At Aliya Resort & Spa, we created an iNaturalist account for the resort and invited our guests to explore the surroundings with us, recording and sharing observations of plants, birds, insects and other wildlife. A simple digital tool, but a lovely way to learn more about the nature that surrounds us.
And beyond the screens, our teams spent the day caring for the places and communities that make travel meaningful. At Wild Glamping Gal Oya, we cleaned around Namal Oya Lake, one of the places our guests love for sunrise, and presented guests with a traditional wooden axe, reflecting the heritage of the Vedda community. Maalu Maalu Resort cleaned and repainted a bus stand in Pasikuda, while Tea & Experience Factory carried out a Shramadana around Pichchamal Falls and put up a reminder for visitors to keep the area clean. At Amba Yaalu Kandalama, girls from the local community joined us for a learning experience around women empowerment, community development and tourism and hospitality.
Different little things, but all part of caring for the places, people and communities that make travel meaningful. 💚
