Destination
Situated in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, Tissamaharama (often called Tissa) is a peaceful lakeside town in the Hambantota District, rich in history and culture. Once part of the ancient Ruhuna Kingdom, it served as a royal capital and remains home to some of the island’s most revered Buddhist sites.
The Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya, believed to have been built by King Kavantissa in the 3rd century BC, stands as the town’s most iconic landmark, only a short walk from many local resorts.
Nearby lies the serene Tissa Wewa, a vast man-made reservoir constructed by King Devanampiyatissa, offering picturesque sunset views and a haven for migratory birds. The area’s charm continues through its lush paddy fields, shimmering lakes, and the simple rural rhythm of farmers tending to their crops — a glimpse of authentic southern life.
Tissamaharama is also known for its creamy buffalo curd, a local delicacy not to be missed. Within easy reach are other cultural and natural highlights such as the Kataragama Temple, a sacred multi-faith pilgrimage site, and the Kirinda coastal shrine, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Just 20 km east lies Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife sanctuary and the epicentre of the island’s wilderness. Home to one of the world’s highest leopard densities, Yala also shelters elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species across diverse landscapes of forest, wetland, and beach. Safari drives from Palatupana or Katagamuwa gates offer unforgettable encounters with nature, especially during the dry season (February – July).
With Bundala, Lunugamvehera, and Udawalawe National Parks all nearby, the Tissamaharama–Yala region is the perfect base for both cultural exploration and adventure. From ancient stupas to untamed wilderness, it blends spirituality, heritage, and wildlife in one remarkable destination.
