Excursions to Horton Plains National Park

Sri Lanka’s highest plains!
Image

Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. The national park is most famous for “Worlds end”- a sheer drop of 1050 meters. When clear of mist, the views will leave you in awe

Horton Plains is Sri Lanka’s highest and most isolated plateau discovered by Sir Thomas Farr in 19 hundred. It is named Horton Plains in honour of the then-British Governor of Sri Lanka Sir Horton. This beautiful Horton Plains trek involves hiking nature tracks that are some of the best in the world and the only place where you can see a bear monkey (Semnopithecus vetulus monticola). The plains are also home to various endemic plant species, birds and insects that can only be seen in the region. Nature lovers will enjoy this wide, Patna-grass-covered plain, the haunt of several wild yet harmless animals and the home of many species of birds. Bridle paths through the plain will take you to the precipice, popularly referred to as “Worlds End “- a sheer drop of 1050 meters. Lie on your stomach and peep over the ridge, the view when it is clear of mist, is simply magnificent.
