World Tourism Day 2025 at Thema Collection: Learning, Giving Back, and Celebrating Sri Lanka
This World Tourism Day, Thema Collection celebrated sustainable tourism, community engagement, and authentic Sri Lankan experiences across all its properties. Each location marked the day in its own unique way, reflecting our commitment to learning, giving back, and creating meaningful moments for guests and communities alike.
At Tea & Experience Factory, students from Namagal College explored our Leaf to Cup experience. From plucking tea leaves to enjoying the rich aroma of freshly brewed tea, they learned how sustainable practices make every cup meaningful. Their hands-on experience and curiosity made the day vibrant and full of energy.
At Aliya Resort & Spa, staff worked alongside the Sri Lanka Air Force and local community to care for Thalkote Lake, clearing litter, placing new garbage bins, and installing signboards to protect the area. Guests received handcrafted bookmarks made from recycled paper, a thoughtful reminder of the impact of mindful tourism. Meanwhile, Wild Glamping Gal Oya welcomed guests with gifts, stories of our collaboration with the Veddha community, traditional blessings under the stars, and hospitality training for the Eastern Province Inter-School Tourism Club finalists, empowering the next generation of Sri Lanka’s tourism leaders.
At Mountbatten Bungalow, staff awareness programs were held on the benefits of tourism, and guests joined in tree planting and property cleanups to refresh the surroundings. Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa combined environmental care and fun, beginning with a beach cleanup at Elephant Rock, followed by laughter-filled sandcastle competitions for guests, and a special awareness session for school leavers from Passikudah to Kalkudah.
Waraka Udawalawe treated guests to homemade jam made from local produce while hosting an interactive discussion on sustainable tourism, emphasizing how small actions can drive positive change. Finally, at Amba Yaalu – Kandalama, the Australian Under-19 Women’s Cricket Team joined in planting Karada and Kubuk saplings by Kandalama Lake, leaving behind a living legacy for the future.
World Tourism Day at Thema Collection reminded us that tourism is more than travel; it’s about learning, giving back, and caring for the places and people we encounter. Each property’s unique celebration highlighted our commitment to sustainable tourism, cultural preservation, and meaningful experiences that connect guests, communities, and nature.
