Mountbatten Bungalow – A classic movie of the bygone era in the 21st century

Kandy, the last independent kingdom in Sri Lanka, has a rich and storied past dating back to the early 13th century. Fast forward to the 20th century, during World War 2, there is a story about Lord Louis Mountbatten who lived in Sri Lanka then. Lord Louis Mountbatten was a close relative of the British royal family. During his time as the head of the Southeast Asia Command, he occupied a bungalow in Kandy as his safe house. Today, it’s known as ‘Mountbatten Bungalow’, a boutique hotel renovated by Thema Collection.

Mountbatten Bungalow is located close to Kandy city. But surprisingly, as you approach Mountbatten Bungalow’s gate, it starts to feel like stepping into a different, quiet setting. It’s like a perfectly curated movie set for an old classic. The soft lighting filtering through large garden windows, vintage photographs of the Victorian era, old horse statues standing in the living area, and butlers in their white sarongs create a scene straight from a historical picture. From the dimly lit corridors to the vintage furnishings within the rooms, every detail of the bungalow has been carefully restored to preserve its historical value recreating the life they had back in the days.

At Mountbatten Bungalow, not just history, but nature lives in every corner. Though it’s just 30 minutes from the bustling city of Kandy, it feels like a world of its own, almost an illusion. Step outside and watch clouds float above your head, listen to birds chirping, and feel the soft breeze caressing your skin. Treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience at the mini-spa and get refreshed as there are many things to be explored around. You may get into the pool while gazing at the greeny view that pleases your eyes, run around the spacious garden, or check what’s in the backyard. Try out the birdwatching trail! Your trail starts in the backyard of the property, so if you’re curious, you may take a glance at what we have inside the greenhouse to discover where we find the ingredients to create the meals you indulge in. The biodiversity around the bungalow is just surprising and clicks with the bungalow’s charm. Would you even believe that you might meet a barking deer at your chalet door? Despite being just 30 minutes away from the bustling city, Mountbatten Bungalow provides a surreal experience in a dreamlike setting where history and peacefulness come together.
