Nature has always given, silently and endlessly. It feeds us, shelters us, and shapes most of the experiences we hold dear. But now, the balance has shifted. Just as we depend on nature, nature depends on us. This year, World Environment Day reminded us to pause, reflect, and act: to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink how we live, especially with plastic. At Thema Collection, June 5th was more than just a date. It became a day of purpose shared across landscapes and people, with each property responding in its own heartfelt way.
At Aliya Resort & Spa, sustainability was gently woven into the guest experience. Polythene was replaced with reusable cloth bags, and clay items took the place of plastic. Also, each guest received a paper elephant, handmade from recycled paper waste. This sense of purpose travelled down to the coast, where the team at Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa stepped onto the shoreline at sunrise, collecting plastic washed ashore. With each bag filled, the coastline grew cleaner. And as the sun climbed higher, hands turned to planting native trees along the coastline.
In Rathugala, Wild Glamping Gal Oya took a more reflective path. Naturalists led an engaging session on the biodiversity of the Nilgala Forest Reserve, weaving in stories of the Veddah community’s deep connection with the land. It was a reminder that protecting nature also means honoring those who have lived in balance with it for generations. Further south, the team at Waraka Udawalawe turned its focus to young minds. A nature-based learning session invited children to explore the wild through stories and play, planting early seeds of care, curiosity, and guardianship.
Over in Kandalama, creativity bloomed! At Amba Yaalu, teams crafted heartfelt displays from natural and recycled materials, expressing hopes for the planet in their own way. The day ended with a tree-planting ceremony, each sapling a promise, quietly rooted in the earth. That same spirit of action flowed into the misty green surrounds of Tea & Experience Factory. Staff stepped outdoors to clean nearby spaces and plant native trees before coming together for a reflective session. It wasn’t just about the environment, but about daily life, how simple choices, made consistently, can shape a more responsible world. And in the quiet elegance of Mountbatten Bungalow, the message came softly. A careful clean-up of the property grounds, done without fuss or spotlight, reminded us that even the smallest steps matter. Sometimes, caring begins right where you stand.
Each initiative was different, but the message was shared: true hospitality extends beyond comfort and care. It’s about stewardship, of place, people, and planet. Whether through action or reflection, education or creativity, our teams came together in the spirit of giving back. As we look back on World Environment Day 2025, we hold on to more than what we did; we carry forward the mindset behind it. Sustainability isn’t something we celebrate once a year. It’s part of who we are and how we move forward, one thoughtful choice at a time. Because the Earth gives us everything, giving back is the least we can do.
